WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) - Champion softball coaching legend Cheryl Weaver picked up her 500th career win with the Flashes taking down Ursuline 14-4 in 5 innings on Thursday.
"There's really no words for it. I never really expected this," Weaver said. "You don't ever start this thinking you'll ever get to a certain number, you just play it year-by-year."
In 25 years, Weaver's career record sits at 500-119-3 with six state championships ('11, '12, '15, '17, '18, 19) as she became the 21st coach in OHSAA softball history to reach 500.
"I've never been anywhere else other than Vienna, I was a JV coach there," Weaver said. "Otherwise, when Mrs. Hood hired me to be here, I never thought about leaving, ever and I still don't."
When it comes to coaches in the Valley, only former Poland head coach Reid Lamport racked up more wins with 586.
"That's the only way you get that, to get to those high numbers is by wonderful players and I will never, ever forget all of them ever," Weaver said. "Every year, it's a different group of girls and just feel so happy for them, you know? And in numbers are numbers, but it's the girls and when they win, that's that's who I'm happy for."
Along with her six state titles with the Champion softball program, they tied the record for most consecutive state titles when the Flashes won three straight from 2017-2019.
