YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -- Each side of Youngstown has a youth football team -- except the North Side. But that's about the change.
Thursday evening at Crandall Park organizers of a new group called Thee Rayen Little Tigers met. They're forming a tackle football team with cheerleaders.
One of the organizers is Jay Glover, who helped run the Little Redmen on the South Side. Now, he wants to help children on the North Side -- not just with tackle football, but also flag football, basketball, track and mentorship programs.
"It's been over 10 years, no sports [have] been going on for kids over here in this neighborhood, and I just felt like there was a need to be addressed," Glover said. "Why not start now?"
The first day to register for Thee Rayen Little Tigers is from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at Crandall Park. There will be a second registration day on April 27.
Conditioning starts in May and June. The first practice will be July 8.
And while on the topic of youth football teams, organizers with the Champion Little Flashes say they're in need of sponsors. The league is trying to buy a new scoreboard, and they're struggling with the upkeep of the field.
