Local nursing students prepare in case of disaster

CHAMPION TWP., Ohio (WKBN) - Kent State Trumbull nursing students got a lesson they hope to never use.

Thursday morning, they took part in a simulated disaster event in which they tested their abilities to respond to a biochemical attack.

If this were to happen in real life, their main responsibility is staffing "PODS," which are "Points of Dispensary." They are pop-up locations where residents can go to get information, treatment and any other help that is needed.

This is critical during emergency situations, ranging from natural disasters to a pandemic.

"COVID is very recent in most of our memories, so during COVID, we operated these Points of Dispensary for multiple things. Not just vaccines for administration, but we also used them to dispense PPE and things of that nature," said Erin Heckman, director of nursing.

Also at the drill were employees with the Trumbull County Combined Health District and Warren City Health District.

Brian Oelbeck contributed to this report.
